ISI Research Incentive Scheme (IRIS)

The aim of the ISI Research Incentive Scheme (IRIS) is to increase the quality level of the journals and conferences on which ISI research is published. The scheme maintains a list of journals and conferences strategically selected by the domain leaders of the ISI. The scheme encourages researchers to submit their work to the venues in the list by providing the following incentives on successful publication:

  • Level 1 conferences: Fully funded by ISI to a maximum of $5000
  • Level 2 conferences: 50% funded by ISI to a maximum of $2500
  • Level 1 journals: $2000 into a specified research account
  • Level 2 journals: $1000 into a specified research account.

How to apply for IRIS support

A request for eligibility must be made prior to submission of the papers to Juan Gonzalez . Requests should include the following information:

  • name of conference or journal,
  • dates of conference or date of intended journal submission,
  • paper authors,
  • nominated traveller/account holder:

Normally all requests for IRIS listed venues will be deemed eligible, subject to the limitations stated below. Once the paper is accepted for publication, one the authors should contact Christine Kincaid in order to initiate the required administrative process.

Are there any limitations for IRIS support?

During any three year period a researcher will be allowed a maximum of

  • one Level 1 conference or three Level 1 journals, and
  • one Level 2 conference or three level 2 journals.

All IRIS support is subject to the availability of funds and the conditions for funding can change at any time.

How can funds for journals be spent?

Funds will be deposited in a QUT research account nominated by the authors. In the case of research students this normally will be an account in the name of the student's supervisor. The funds are intended to be spent in support of research related activities of the author(s) of the paper.

Addition of journals/conferences to the IRIS list

The IRIS list of target journals and conferences is intended to be dynamic and new entries can be added. If you have a journal or conference that you think should be added to the list, contact Juan Gonzalez . Normally you will be required to seek the support from your domain leader and provide appropriate evidence of the quality of the venue and/or strategic value. The following principles will be applied when considering new venues:

  • The level 1 venues should be ones that ISI members have rarely managed to publish at in the past (for example, less than one per year on average for whole of ISI). These would normally be classed A+ or A in the published tiers by ERA (http://www.arc.gov.au/era/) and CORE (http://www.core.edu.au/).
  • The level 2 venues should be ones that ISI members do not usually manage to publish at (for example, less than one per year on average for any ISI member). These would normally be classed A or B in the published tiers by ERA (http://www.arc.gov.au/era/) and CORE (http://www.core.edu.au/).

Disclaimer

IRIS is currently in a trial phase and the rules are subject to change without notice. This will not affect submissions already deemed eligible.
